Been watching “Stephen Fry in America” on Netflix instant watch. I was expecting something a bit more overtly funny, but I’m happy with its tone. It’s like “California’s Gold,” but isntead of the wide-eyed goonery of Huell Howser, it’s an incredibly mannered and witty Englishman. Not that he isn’t equally in awe of the wonders presented to him. And, thankfully, he’s far more merciful than I would have expected a “witty English comedian traveling through Alabama” may have been.
And it IS pretty nice to see how America is viewed by an outsider here to take in the sights. For instance, the above photo is Fry at an Auburn vs U of A game, and he’s completely flabbergasted how over-the-top it is for a game that isn’t like….a national championship. And in the middle of explaining this, a bunch of Blue Angels fly over the stadium and you can tell his brain just exploded.
