#45b. English Strong Ale
Entry: Fuller’s 1845 (6.3%ABV, England)
Seriously. These fucking English beers. Why can’t I get back to weird American beers where they’re like “I wonder what it’d taste like if we make a beer with pomegranates from a recipe found in the tomb of a Persian king?” Listen. When I go to a bar, I like a classic drink. I’ll get a rusty nail to look super manly and because it feels like something Tom Waits would drink. Mostly because I think his throat is made of rust and nails. But the English beer scene is just like…”here’s a straight-ahead beer with prominent malt characters. You like a parade of toffee/coffee/chocolate/maple flavors, right? Never any bright spot. I know these things are classic for a reason, but it just feels like variations on a theme. This is just a higher-alcohol version of a porter. It’s boring. I am bored. We’ll get back to fun stuff someday. But for now we’re stiff upper-lipping all these workingman’s utility beers. Bah.
